George Bomford in Buckskins and Suspenders

George Bomford in Buckskins and Suspenders
Unknown Maker, George Bomford in Buckskins and Suspenders, quarter plate daguerreotype. Collection of Matthew R. Isenburg
This photograph of a typical overland 49er is as important for its historical significance as it is for its esthetic uniqueness. The image has a certain monumental quality about it: the way he is framed standing up, his pose, the shadows cast by the careful studio lighting. All of these aspects combine to make this much more than just a portrait. It is, instead, the representation of a heroic figure.
