San Francisco Fire Brigade #2 on Meigg's Wharf
Unknown maker, San Francisco Fire Brigade #2 on Meigg's Wharf, Whole plate ambrotype. Collection of The Bancroft Library
The San Francisco Fire Department was founded in January 1850, and the Manhattan Engine Company No. 2, pictured here, was organized in January 1854. The Annals of San Francisco for 1854 report that "The Manhattan, though young, has given proof of its strength and usefulness, and now numbers over fifty good members -- all permanent citizens. The apparatus is a New York side-lever engine, with hose cart, and is located on Montgomery Street, adjoining the Metropolitan Theatre."
