[Since most of the delegates were white men of the business and professional classes, their interests might have been paramount. There were also a good number of farmers (agriculturists), and by the end of the century, farming became so important that the University of California was established as an agricultural school, with mining as a secondary area of emphasis. The vote for a school of mines alone would not have carried.] Note to teacher: California's constitution adopted the Mexican constitutional provision that recognized the right of a woman to own and keep property, as well as the concept of community property rights. |
