A
whole plate daguerreotype with an obituary and various
memorials pinned to the felt of the case. The obituary
reads, "Died in this city, July 22d, of Panama
fever, Philip A. Potter aged 21 years, formerly of New
Bedford, Mass." Potter's friends stand near the
elegant gravesite of their young companion.
Daguerreotypes not only recorded the events and emotions
of life, they also immortalized the sadness and frequency
of death far from home. |
