| Many of the daguerreotypes taken in the Gold Rush era were cheap, quick, and basic. Certain elements of this photograph -- the man is standing slightly off-center, the cloth backdrop is wrinkled and creased -- indicate that this portrait was probably taken in a mobile daguerreian studio somewhere in the gold-mining region. | |
